Nova Scotia SPCA seizes 11 animals living in unsanitary conditions, Canso woman charged

CANSO, N.S. — A 68-year-old Canso, N.S., woman has been charged with allowing 11 animals to be in distress.

On Sept. 21, Nova Scotia SPCA received complaints of animals living in unsanitary conditions at a home in the community.

When officers arrived at the home of Maureen Davis, they found 10 dogs and one cat living in unhealthy conditions, and an order to change their conditions was issued.

On Nov. 7, all 11 animals were seized due to non-compliance.

On Nov. 28, Davis appeared in front of the Nova Scotia Animal Welfare Appeal Board, however, the board found the seizure reasonable and that the animals would remain with the Nova Scotia SPCA.

Davis is scheduled to appear in Antigonish provincial court on Feb. 28, 2024.

All concerns and complaints regarding animal safety submitted to the SPCA are kept confidential. Residents are encouraged to report acts of cruelty by calling the SPCA toll-free at 1-888-703-7722, e-mailing [email protected], or filling out an online form.
