Nova Scotia’s largest-ever medical residency class begins providing care

HALIFAX, NS — The province’s largest-ever medical residency class began providing care to Nova Scotians on July 1.

The provincial government said a record 233 resident physicians, 77 of whom are Dalhousie Medical School graduates, began their training on Saturday, July 1.

Last fall, the county announced funding for 10 family medicine residencies at Dalhousie University School of Medicine. As of this year, there are 80 new general practitioners

In addition, 10 more of the available residency spots were designated for international medical graduates with a Nova Scotia connection. According to the province, all residence seats are occupied this year.

Dr. Kath Stringer, head of the Department of General Practice at Dalhousie, said the university is delighted to welcome the new international graduates.

“I also want to thank the exceptional family physicians who welcome these residents into their practices and the staff and communities across the county who made this expansion possible,” said Stringer.

International medical graduates who receive residency in Nova Scotia must complete a three-year return to service after completing their residency program.
