New York City socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is facing scrutiny over his growing circle of influence, which includes activists with anti-Israel views and socialist principles. Despite efforts to distance himself from the label of being too “radical,” Mamdani’s connections paint a different picture.

Mamdani, known for his criticism of President Trump’s immigration policies, relies on advisors such as New York Immigration Coalition president Murad Awawdeh, who advocates for ending “state support for detention, deportation, and mass incarceration.” Awawdeh has pushed for illegal immigrants to have access to taxpayer-funded healthcare, stating that it is a right they “deserve.”

NYIC, with ties to the Vera Institute for Justice and funding from George Soros’s nonprofit network, has been criticized for its involvement in assisting illegal immigrants in avoiding deportations. Mamdani’s advisor Patrick Gaspard, a former president of Soros’s Open Society Foundations, has defended Soros against accusations of funding radical DAs and far-left groups.

Despite facing accusations of being a “communist,” Mamdani dismisses the label and is advised by housing advocate Cea Weaver, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Weaver’s ties to far-left groups have raised concerns about Mamdani’s housing policies.

In addition to his socialist connections, Mamdani has been criticized for his anti-Israel statements and associations with activists like Faiza Ali, who has ties to the Council on American-Islamic Relations and Linda Sarsour. Sarsour, known for her anti-Israel views, has been accused of promoting antisemitism.

Mamdani’s campaign manager Maya Handa and senior adviser Morris Katz have also come under fire for their anti-Israel stances, further fueling the controversy surrounding Mamdani’s candidacy.
