According to a recent Brazilian study published in the Journal Neurology, consuming large amounts of artificial sweeteners, commonly found in soft drinks and other beverages, could have a negative impact on cognitive health. The study revealed that participants who consumed the highest levels of artificial sweeteners experienced a significant decline in thinking and memory skills, resulting in accelerated brain aging.

The study, which followed 12,772 adults over eight years, found that those who consumed the most artificial sweeteners experienced a 62% faster decrease in cognitive abilities, equivalent to around 1.6 years of extra brain aging. Younger adults under the age of 60 and individuals with diabetes were identified as being at the highest risk.

The specific artificial sweeteners studied included aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame-k, erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol, and tagatosis. Participants who consumed the highest levels of these sweeteners showed a faster decline in cognition, particularly in memory function.

Lead researcher Claudia Kimie Suemoto emphasized the importance of choosing natural alternatives to artificial sweeteners, such as fruit, honey, or maple syrup. Suemoto advised reducing both added sugars and artificial sweeteners in the diet to promote brain health and overall well-being.
