Outgoing Ottawa MPP apologizes for ‘inappropriate’ post blasted as Islamophobic

An outgoing Progressive Conservative MPP in Ottawa is facing backlash after making Islamophobic comments on social media about a candidate vying for her seat. Lisa MacLeod, the longtime MPP for Nepean, posted on X about candidate Husien Abu-Rayash, sparking outrage among Muslim groups and prompting an apology from MacLeod herself.

In her post, MacLeod shared a link promoting Abu-Rayash’s campaign with a comment insinuating that supporting Sharia Law could lead to him becoming the next PC candidate for Nepean. This reference to Shariah, the legal code of Islam, was deemed offensive and inappropriate by many.

Another post by MacLeod shared what appeared to be a message from Abu-Rayash’s campaign, accusing her of not supporting the Muslim community and pushing pro-Israel policies. Both posts have since been removed.

Abu-Rayash responded to MacLeod’s comments, expressing disappointment and stating that her remarks were defamatory and Islamophobic. He demanded an apology and called for MacLeod to refrain from interfering in the nomination process.

In her apology posted on X, MacLeod acknowledged that her comments were inappropriate and expressed regret for any harm caused. She admitted that it was not her intention to mislead or hurt anyone and recognized the need to do better in her communication.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) condemned MacLeod’s remarks as profoundly disappointing, while the Muslim Advisory Council of Canada called for her removal from the Progressive Conservative Party caucus. They criticized MacLeod for making assumptions about Muslims and perpetuating harmful stereotypes.

Despite the controversy, MacLeod has announced that she will not seek re-election in the next Ontario election. The Premier’s office has yet to respond to calls for condemnation of MacLeod’s comments.
