Owner of Montreal jewelry store fights back after thieves crash car through shop in brazen robbery

Montreal jeweler Gaganjeet Singh’s worst fears came true just days after urging police to step up patrols on de Liège Street where his store, Famous Jewellers, is located. On Saturday evening, a group of thieves orchestrated a violent robbery by crashing a car into the storefront and making off with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. Singh, who tried to fend off the robbers, sustained injuries during the incident.

Surveillance footage captured the chaotic scene as the car backed through the storefront, allowing three masked individuals to storm the shop. Singh can be seen engaging in a physical altercation with the thieves as they smashed display cases and stuffed bags with stolen goods. The thieves managed to steal between $600,000 and $700,000 worth of gold before fleeing the scene.

This is not the first time Famous Jewellers has been targeted by criminals. Singh recalls a previous burglary in January that has left him feeling constantly on edge. Despite his efforts to protect his store, Singh acknowledges the need for increased security measures in the area.

In response to the recent spate of break-ins, Montreal police have vowed to increase patrols in the neighborhood. Sabrina Gauthier, a spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), emphasized the rarity of car-related thefts like the one at Famous Jewellers. She advised the public not to engage with burglars and to exercise caution when faced with suspicious individuals.

As the investigation into the robbery continues, police are waiting on a report to confirm the total value of stolen goods. While one suspect is in custody, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. In the meantime, police have promised to boost patrols around all types of stores during the holiday season to prevent further criminal activity.

The violent robbery at Famous Jewellers serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of safety and security measures for local businesses. Singh’s plea for increased police presence underscores the need for proactive measures to protect against future incidents of theft and violence.
