Philadelphia Phillies Sign Closer Jordan Romano to One-Year Deal
The Philadelphia Phillies have made a bold move by signing closer Jordan Romano to a one-year contract. The right-hander, who is looking to bounce back from a right elbow injury, will be joining the Phillies for the upcoming season.
The terms of the agreement were not disclosed by the Phillies, but reports suggest that Romano’s contract is worth $8.5 million. This signing shows that the Phillies are willing to take a short-term gamble on Romano’s potential.
Romano, a two-time All-Star in 2022 and 2023, previously played for the Toronto Blue Jays for six seasons. With 105 career saves and a 2.90 ERA in 231 relief appearances, Romano brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Phillies bullpen.
Despite his injury-shortened season in 2023, Romano has been one of the most reliable closers in the league. His 88.98% save percentage since 2019 ranks second among pitchers with at least 100 save opportunities, only behind Josh Hader. Additionally, Romano’s 105 saves since 2019 place him ninth among all pitchers in baseball.
The 31-year-old right-hander underwent arthroscopic surgery on his elbow last July, but he is expected to be fully recovered for the upcoming season. His addition to the Phillies bullpen could signal the departure of Carlos Estévez and Jeff Hoffman, both of whom are free agents after struggling in the postseason.
