Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler needs additional surgery, out for the rest of the season

The Philadelphia Phillies received devastating news over the weekend as their ace, Zack Wheeler, was diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome. This diagnosis comes after Wheeler underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from his upper right arm on August 18.

Following the initial surgery, Wheeler had a follow-up evaluation which led to the recommendation of additional thoracic outlet decompression surgery. This new procedure is expected to sideline the veteran right-hander for six to eight months, putting his availability for the start of the 2026 season in jeopardy.

Wheeler, 35, was having a stellar season prior to this setback, boasting a 10-5 record with a 2.71 ERA in 24 starts. His 195 strikeouts led the National League and he was considered a frontrunner for the NL Cy Young Award. This would have been Wheeler’s third time contending for the prestigious honor, having finished as the runner-up in 2021 and 2024.

The Phillies will now have to adjust their pitching rotation in Wheeler’s absence and hope for a successful recovery for their ace. This news is undoubtedly a blow to the team as they push for a playoff spot in the competitive NL East division.

Our thoughts are with Zack Wheeler as he undergoes this additional surgery and begins his journey towards recovery. Stay tuned for updates on his progress and the Phillies’ pitching situation as they navigate the remainder of the season without their ace.
