Police identify senior killed in fatal Pickering stabbing last week

Durham Regional Police have identified the victim of a fatal stabbing in Pickering as 83-year-old retired kindergarten teacher Eleanor Doney. Her body was discovered with stab wounds outside a home on Lynn Heights Drive and Fairport Road last Thursday. The police had initially withheld Doney’s name at the request of her family.

A 14-year-old boy is currently facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with Doney’s death. Authorities have confirmed that there was no prior connection between Doney and her alleged attacker. In a statement released through the police, Doney’s family expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support and love they have received following her tragic passing.

“We are especially thankful to the first responders for their tireless efforts during this difficult time. We find solace in the fact that Eleanor was a woman of strong Christian faith,” the family statement read.

Pastor Kevin Armstrong, who had known Doney for over thirty years as a member of his congregation in Ajax, described her as a generous, kind, and witty individual. He emphasized that Doney was truly one of a kind.

Durham police have urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward, no matter how insignificant it may seem. Additionally, due to the accused being a 14-year-old from Pickering, it is illegal to share any photos or identifying details of the teen under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

“Posting such images is considered a criminal offense. We urge you to hand over any videos to the police and use social media as a platform to honor Eleanor’s memory,” the police statement emphasized.
