Police investigate Brazilian fans over pig’s head

Brazilian Police Investigating Fans After Pig’s Head Incident at Corinthians vs. Palmeiras Game

SAO PAULO –

Brazilian authorities are currently investigating three soccer fans following a shocking incident that took place during a heated match between Corinthians and Palmeiras. The game, which ended with Corinthians securing a 2-0 victory over their rivals, was marred by the disturbing sight of a pig’s head being thrown onto the field.

The incident occurred in the 39th minute of the match, while the score was still tied at 0-0. As Palmeiras was preparing to take a corner kick, a pig’s head was hurled onto the pitch, prompting Corinthians striker Yuri Alberto to rush over and kick it away.

Reflecting on the bizarre turn of events, Alberto shared, “I almost broke my foot. I thought it was a cushion, something like that. I tried to kick it hard, but it was a pig’s head; I almost injured my foot in the process.”

Investigator César Saad revealed that the pig’s head had been brought to the stadium hours before the match. Two individuals have been questioned in connection with the incident, with authorities still searching for a third person who was seated alongside them during the game.

The animosity between the two clubs runs deep, with Palmeiras supporters being derogatorily referred to as pigs by local fans since 1969. This derogatory term originated following a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of two Corinthians players, prompting Palmeiras to refuse the team’s request to sign replacements.

In a twist of irony, Palmeiras later embraced the pig as its official mascot.

This incident draws parallels to a similar occurrence in Spain back in 2002 when Barcelona fans tossed a pig’s head onto the field during a high-profile “clasico” game. The provocative act was aimed at former Barcelona player Luis Figo, who had transferred to Real Madrid.
