Police investigating shooting in north-end Halifax

A man is in hospital with gunshot wounds following a shooting Thursday morning in north-end Halifax.

Halifax police say they responded to a report of an injured person in the 3600 block of Rosemeade Avenue around 7:30 a.m.

When they arrived, officers found the victim with gunshot wounds. They say two men, who are believed to know each other, were in a fight and one man shot the other.

The man who was shot was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers were in the area looking for the suspect for hours. Police say he’s a white man with short, dark hair wearing a beige cardigan over a white shirt, dark baggy pants, grey shoes and carrying a grey shoulder bag.

The street reopened by 10 a.m. and most officers left the scene.

But police were back on Rosemeade on Friday morning in relation to the shooting.

A news release said investigators, along with members of the emergency response team, returned to the home to continue their investigation.

Rosemeade Avenue between Normandy Drive and Woodbine Avenue was closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Schools disrupted

The shooting happened a few hundred metres away from St. Stephen’s Elementary School and close to Highland Park Junior High School on the first day of school.

Lindsey Bunin, communications officer with the Halifax Regional Centre for Education, said in an emailed statement that both the schools were placed in hold and secure as a precaution, and principals escorted students into the buildings. Families were notified of the situation early in the morning.

Vishnu and Vishalini Battula have two children going to school in the area. Vishnu said things were tense before school.

“Today’s the first day, right? We just dropped them off so they can start learning, but once we [saw] all the police and [the] situation here, it was scary to us,” he said.

The orders were later lifted and the school day continued as usual.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact police.
