Police union issues endorsement of key ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ provisions

The largest police union in the country, the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), has recently endorsed key provisions of President Donald Trump-backed “big, beautiful” budget bill. FOP President Patrick Yoes announced the union’s strong support for the bill, stating that it is a promise kept to public safety officers across the country and a step towards an economy that uplifts those who keep it safe.

Yoes specifically highlighted two provisions in the bill that the FOP strongly supports. The first is a tax deduction for overtime pay, which President Trump had initially proposed during his campaign. The second provision is an increase in the state and local tax (SALT) deductions, which are important to the rank-and-file members of the 377,000-member organization.

The bill passed the House after a contentious all-night debate, with Republicans narrowly securing a victory in a 215-214 vote. However, the bill now faces opposition from Democrats and some Republicans in the Senate.

The FOP praised the leadership of President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson for passing the bill in Congress. Yoes emphasized that the current cap on SALT deductions unfairly penalizes law enforcement officers, who often need to live within a certain distance of the jurisdictions they serve. He noted that the SALT deduction is a valuable way of supporting local budgets as law enforcement agencies face financial challenges associated with rising costs of equipment, vehicles, and personnel.

Republicans representing high-tax states like New York City and Los Angeles have pushed for raising the SALT deduction cap, framing it as an existential issue that could impact the GOP’s House majority in the 2026 midterms. On the other hand, Republicans from lower-tax states are wary of raising the deduction cap, believing it incentivizes high-tax policies in blue states.

Despite the differing opinions within the Republican Party, Yoes emphasized the importance of the provisions in the bill for law enforcement officers. He stated that these provisions are critical to ensuring a better quality of life for those in the law enforcement profession and expressed appreciation for President Trump’s support for the nation’s law enforcement officers.

In conclusion, the FOP’s endorsement of key provisions in the “big, beautiful” budget bill highlights the importance of supporting law enforcement officers and addressing financial challenges faced by police departments across the country. The debate over the SALT deduction cap continues to be a contentious issue within the Republican Party, but the FOP remains steadfast in its support for measures that benefit its members.
