Police warn of suspected drink tampering in Antigonish area

RCMP in the Antigonish area have issued a warning regarding two incidents of suspected drink tampering. According to the police, individuals reported that they believed a substance had been added to their drink without their knowledge at two different licensed liquor establishments.
Authorities are currently investigating these incidents and are urging anyone who may have been a victim or who witnessed any drink tampering to come forward with information. The town of Antigonish, located on the northeast mainland of Nova Scotia, is home to St. Francis Xavier University and has a population of approximately 4,700 residents, which increases to around 10,000 during the school year.
Jacob Cruchet, president of the St. FX Students’ Union, expressed his concern over the recent incidents. While it is unclear if students were involved, Cruchet emphasized the importance of drink safety awareness and access to support services, especially with St. Patrick’s Day approaching. He advised students to be cautious and vigilant in social settings, to watch out for one another, and to seek help if needed. Students with concerns are encouraged to contact the university’s sexual violence prevention and response advocate or reach out to the RCMP for assistance.
In light of these incidents, it is crucial for individuals to prioritize their safety and well-being when consuming drinks in public places. Being aware of one’s surroundings, looking out for friends, and seeking help if necessary are essential practices to ensure a safe and enjoyable social experience. Stay informed, stay safe, and remember that support is always available.
