Police watchdog BC called after death in Surrey after ‘medical emergency’

SURREY, BC — The British Columbia police watchdog is investigating the death of a man in Surrey on Friday night while he was in custody.

BC’s Independent Investigations Office says RCMP received a call around 7:30 p.m. about a man and woman walking in traffic in the 19300 block of the Fraser Highway

Officers say they took the man into custody and “went into medical distress” shortly after.

Investigators say the man received medical attention from police, fire and BC Emergency Health Services, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

BC’s Independent Investigations Office investigates all county police-related incidents that result in serious injury or death, regardless of any allegations of wrongdoing.

The office is asking anyone who has relevant information or video footage of the incident to contact them.
