Poll Position: Where Trump stands among Americans nine weeks into his second presidency

President Donald Trump has been making headlines since returning to power in the White House nine weeks ago, touting that America is “back” as he spotlights his accomplishments – some of which are controversial. Trump has been moving at an unprecedented speed during his second term, expanding executive powers, upending government policy, and making significant cuts to the federal workforce through a flurry of executive orders and actions.
Since his inauguration on Jan. 20, Trump has signed roughly 100 executive orders, far surpassing the rate of any recent presidential predecessors during their opening weeks in office. Despite facing backlash for some of his decisions, Trump remains unwavering in his belief that “a lot of great things are happening” under his leadership.
However, public opinion polling tells a different story. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted recently, 51% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s performance as president, while 45% approve. A Fox News national poll conducted in mid-March also showed a divided opinion, with 49% approval and 51% disapproval.
Despite these numbers, Trump’s approval rating in the latest Fox News poll matches his all-time high, which he last reached in April 2020. This increase is attributed to the solidification of the Republican base behind him, a stark contrast to the beginning of his first term when he faced challenges with some Republicans.
Trump’s favorable ratings are slightly underwater, but they remain higher than during his first term in office. Additionally, the percentage of Americans who believe the country is on the right track has increased to above 40%, the most positive figures in years.
Comparing Trump to his immediate predecessor, Joe Biden, the former president started his single term with favorable approval ratings in the low-to-mid-50s. However, Biden’s numbers took a hit following his handling of the U.S. exit from Afghanistan and other crises, leading to continuous negative ratings throughout his presidency.
Despite facing criticism and controversy, Trump remains confident in his leadership and accomplishments. As he continues to navigate his second term, it remains to be seen how his presidency will be perceived in the eyes of the American people.
