Pope Francis discharged from hospital, issues message condemning Israeli bombing

Pope Francis, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, made his triumphant return to the Vatican on Sunday morning after a five-week hospitalization. The 88-year-old pontiff, who had been battling a severe case of pneumonia, was seen exiting Rome’s Gemelli Hospital in a wheelchair and wearing nasal tubes for oxygen. He was accompanied by a convoy of police vehicles as he made his way to his residence at the Vatican.
Before leaving the hospital, Pope Francis stopped at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, a place he often visits, to deliver a bouquet of flowers to be placed in front of the Salus populi Romani icon. This gesture was a symbol of gratitude and reverence for the Virgin Mary, who is highly venerated in the Catholic faith.
During his time in the hospital, Pope Francis made his first public appearance since February 14, offering a Sunday blessing and commenting on world affairs. In a statement issued by the Holy See Press Office, the pontiff expressed his sadness over the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip and called for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further loss of life.
The pope also addressed the recent peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, expressing hope that it would contribute to lasting peace in the South Caucasus region. He urged prayers for an end to wars and for peace in troubled regions such as Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Upon his arrival at the Vatican, Pope Francis was greeted by a large crowd of faithful and pilgrims who had gathered at St. Peter’s Basilica to participate in the 2025 Holy Year celebrations. Despite his weakened voice and physical condition, the pope waved and smiled at the crowd, expressing his gratitude for their prayers and support.
After 38 days of medical treatment and rehabilitation, Pope Francis was discharged from the hospital and returned to the Vatican to begin a period of rest and recovery. His personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, emphasized that the pope would need ongoing medical care and respiratory therapy as he continues to recover from his illness.
Despite the challenges he has faced, Pope Francis remains hopeful and optimistic about the future. He has expressed his gratitude for the prayers and well-wishes of the faithful and called for continued efforts towards peace and reconciliation in the world.
As the leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis plays a crucial role in promoting unity, compassion, and understanding among people of different cultures and faiths. His return to the Vatican is a testament to his resilience and dedication to serving others, even in the face of personal challenges. The faithful can look forward to his continued leadership and guidance as he embarks on the next phase of his recovery journey.
