Presidential election puts strain on relationships, surveys find
The upcoming presidential election is causing stress for many Americans, and this stress can spill over into their relationships. A recent poll conducted by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that 77% of Americans view the future of the nation as a significant source of stress, along with concerns about the economy and the election itself. This online survey, which included 3,000 U.S. adults of various political affiliations, also examined the impact of election results on people’s relationships.
According to the survey, 32% of adults reported experiencing strain in their relationships with family members due to the political climate, while 30% said they have limited their time with family members who do not share the same values. Additionally, half of U.S. adults admitted that tensions around social and political topics make them want to connect less with others, and 28% claimed they have nothing in common with those who hold different political opinions.
Another survey conducted by LifeStance Health in August 2024 found that 44% of Americans have experienced conflicts in their personal lives due to political or election-related discussions. Additionally, nearly a quarter of respondents had considered ending a friendship due to opposing political views, while 18% had actually done so.
Political affiliation can also play a role in dating, with 46% of adults stating they would not date someone with different political opinions. This sentiment was particularly strong among Gen Z respondents, with half of them considering political compatibility to be an important factor in dating.
MK Clarkin, a licensed clinical social worker and executive clinical director at LifeStance Health, emphasized the importance of setting clear and kind boundaries when engaging in political discussions with friends and family members. She recommended using “I feel” statements to express views without escalating tension and encouraged open dialogue and empathy, even amid disagreement.
Despite the current divisive political climate, experts stress the importance of maintaining healthy social connections and engaging in conversations with people who hold different values. By focusing on shared values such as kindness, respect, and support, individuals can enrich their relationships and build resilience against the stressors that come from political division.
