Prime Minister New Brunswick announces cabinet change after two ministers resign

FREDERICTON – New Brunswick Prime Minister Blaine Higgs will shake up his cabinet today.

The move follows the recent resignation of two ministers who objected to the prime minister’s leadership style and changes to the province’s policy on sexual orientation in schools.

The ministers resigning were Dorothy Shephard, who was Minister for Social Development, and Trevor Holder, who had been Minister for Labour.

It is unclear whether the Progressive Conservative prime minister will go beyond replacing Shephard and Holder when the new cabinet is announced.

JP Lewis, a political science professor at the University of New Brunswick Saint John, calls the shuffle remarkable and interesting.

He says bringing in new people for portfolios could help Higgs get a handle on the story, but it could be risky if people who remained loyal to him don’t get promoted.
