Project Linus: Moncton group hands out blankets to children
Providing Comfort Through Handmade Blankets
For over a decade, the Greater Moncton chapter of Project Linus has been dedicated to creating blankets for children in need of comfort during difficult times. Led by a group of retired women, lovingly referred to as ‘blanketeers’, more than 16,000 blankets have been crafted since late 2009.
Gisèle Julien, a retired educator and group co-ordinator, was introduced to Project Linus by a former principal. Reflecting on her journey with the organization, she shared, “She asked some of us if we would be interested in starting a Project Linus, so a bunch of us decided to do that and 15 years later here I am, a Project Linus member.”
Julien’s home in Dieppe, N.B., affectionately known as “blanket central,” serves as the hub for the group’s activities. When blankets are received, they are sorted and prepared for delivery from her home. Various local organizations benefit from these handmade blankets, including Ronald McDonald House, the Jean Irving Centre, and the Beauséjour Family Crisis Centre.
In addition to blankets, knitted dolls made by an 83-year-old member are also distributed. These dolls, each unique with hearts on their faces, are often given to children in hospitals to provide comfort during medical procedures.
One touching story shared by Julien highlights the impact of Project Linus on families in crisis. Following a tragic accident, blankets were provided to a grieving family, including a twin sister, another sister, and a friend who was present during the incident. The older sister later expressed gratitude for the blankets, emphasizing how they helped them through a difficult time.
While many members use their own materials, donations are crucial to sustaining their efforts. Yarn donations, often received from individuals looking to declutter, are distributed among members for their projects. Sewn blankets are also created by a dedicated member, ensuring a variety of crafting techniques are utilized.
Project Linus in Moncton is always welcoming new blanketeers to join their cause. Meetings are held twice a month, with details available on their Facebook page. The group’s commitment to providing comfort and warmth through handmade blankets continues to make a difference in the lives of children in need.
