Trump says Jack Smith is a ‘disgrace’ after special counsel resigned from DOJ: ‘He left town empty handed!’

President-elect Trump did not hold back in his criticism of special counsel Jack Smith, who recently resigned from the Justice Department. In a scathing post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump called Smith a “disgrace” to himself and the country, accusing him of wasting over $100 million on a “Witch Hunt” against him.

Smith’s resignation was announced in a court filing over the weekend, with the document stating that he had completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, before parting ways with the Department on January 10.

Appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022, Smith was tasked with investigating Trump’s involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and his handling of classified information. Prior to this role, Smith had served as the acting U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee during Trump’s first administration.

The timing of Smith’s resignation is significant as it comes just before the release of his report on the Capitol riot case. A recent court filing indicated that Garland plans to make the report public soon, possibly before Trump assumes office next week.

Despite the impending release of the report, Trump expressed his disdain for Smith’s investigations and the charges brought against him. Following his victory in the presidential election, Smith filed motions to close the cases against the president-elect. In late November, he requested to drop the charges related to the Capitol riot and asked to vacate all deadlines in anticipation of Trump’s electoral win.

In response to the dropped cases, Trump stated that they “should never have been brought” and criticized them as “empty and lawless.” He portrayed the investigations as a political ploy and a dark moment in the country’s history, but emphasized his perseverance and victory in the face of adversity.
