Puerto Rico governor pens Trump after Venezuela’s Maduro threatens invasion

The governor of Puerto Rico has issued a plea to President-elect Trump following threats made by Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro to invade the U.S. island territory. In a letter addressed to Trump, Gov. Jenniffer González-Colón expressed grave concern over Maduro’s recent remarks, calling them an “open threat to the United States, our national security, and stability in the region.”
Maduro’s threat came during an “International Anti-Fascist Festival” in Caracas, where he ominously suggested an invasion of Puerto Rico with Brazilian troops. This provocative statement follows his controversial swearing-in ceremony for a third term as president, which has been widely condemned as illegitimate.
Governor González-Colón emphasized the long-standing ties between Puerto Rico and the United States, dating back to 1898 when the island became a U.S. territory. She highlighted the contributions of Puerto Ricans to American society, including their service in the U.S. military in every conflict since World War I.
In a recent referendum on Puerto Rico’s political status, a majority of voters expressed support for U.S. statehood. The governor underscored Puerto Rico’s strategic importance to the U.S., hosting key military installations like Fort Buchanan and National Guard facilities that support U.S. military operations in the region.
González-Colón called on Trump to take swift action against Maduro’s threats, reassuring him of Puerto Rico’s commitment to strengthening its alliance with the United States. She expressed readiness to collaborate with the incoming administration to address security concerns posed by the Maduro regime.
Rep. Mario Rafael Díaz-Balart of Florida commended the governor for condemning Maduro’s threats and expressed confidence in the incoming administration’s commitment to upholding freedom and national security interests. He warned Maduro that his days in power are numbered and urged him to step down to avoid a fate similar to other dictators.
As the transition of power unfolds, the Biden administration faces challenges in dealing with Venezuela’s political crisis. While sanctions have been imposed on Maduro officials, the administration has refrained from toughening measures on Venezuela’s energy sector to prevent potential repercussions on the oil market.
In conclusion, the governor’s plea to President-elect Trump underscores the urgency of addressing the escalating tensions between Venezuela and Puerto Rico. As the region braces for potential instability, a coordinated response from the U.S. government is imperative to safeguard the security and well-being of Puerto Ricans and uphold democratic values in the face of authoritarian threats.
