Detection skills of colon cancer can weaken with AI, find research

European researchers conducted a study to examine how AI can impact the performance of endoscopists during colonoscopies. The study focused on four endoscopy centers in Poland that introduced AI tools for polyp detection in late 2021.
During the study, colonoscopies were randomly assigned to be performed with or without AI assistance. The researchers evaluated the quality of the colonoscopies by comparing the adenoma detection rate (ADR) before and after the implementation of AI.
The results, published in Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology, revealed a significant decrease in tumor detection rates when AI was used. Specifically, the tumor detection percentage dropped from 28.4% to 22.4% after exposure to AI.
