PWHL’s Fleet, Sirens swap players in league’s 2nd trade of season

The Boston Fleet have made a significant acquisition by adding Canadian Olympic gold medallist Jill Saulnier to their roster in a trade with the New York Sirens. The swap also involves American forward Taylor Girard moving to the Sirens, providing both players with a change of scenery as they look to make an impact with their new teams.

Girard, who has struggled to find her form with the Fleet this season, joins the Sirens in exchange for Saulnier. Despite being unable to register a point in her five games with the Fleet, Girard showed promise with six points in 23 games last season before suffering a season-ending injury. On the other hand, Saulnier has also faced injury setbacks over the past two PWHL seasons but brings a wealth of experience to the Sirens, having competed in two Olympic Games for Team Canada and winning a gold medal in 2022.

Saulnier’s leadership and competitive spirit are expected to bolster the Fleet both on and off the ice, with GM Danielle Marmer expressing confidence in her ability to make a positive impact. In contrast, Girard’s physicality and disciplined approach make her a valuable addition to the Sirens, according to GM Pascal Daoust.

The trade marks the second major move of the PWHL season, following a blockbuster trade between the Toronto Sceptres and Ottawa Charge on New Year’s Eve. This is also the first trade the Sirens have made since the league’s inception last year, highlighting the team’s commitment to strengthening their roster.

Saulnier is set to make her debut for the Fleet on Wednesday as they take on the Sceptres, while Girard will don the Sirens jersey for the first time on Saturday against the Toronto team. Fans can catch the action live on CBC TV, CBC Gem, and CBCSports.ca, as both players look to make an immediate impact with their new teams in the highly competitive PWHL league.
