Rick Scott sees red wave as ‘best case scenario’ for Senate leader bid as he lobbies Trump for support
Senator Rick Scott, R-Fla., is wasting no time jumping into campaign mode after his successful re-election in Florida. He is now vying for the Republican Senate leader position and his first order of business is securing the endorsement of President-elect Donald Trump.
According to a senior source close to Scott, the Florida Republican is actively lobbying Trump for his support in the upcoming GOP leader race. The source believes that Trump’s recent electoral win gives Scott a strong mandate and makes him the ideal candidate for the position.
While Trump has not yet endorsed any candidate in the leader race, Scott has been in communication with the president-elect, with the two exchanging text messages following their victories. Scott is hopeful that Trump will back him in the race as it quickly intensifies.
Senator Ron Johnson, R-Wis., has already endorsed Scott and is urging Trump to do the same. During an appearance on “The Jesse Kelly Show,” Johnson encouraged Trump to publicly support Scott if he has any influence with the president-elect.
On the other hand, Senator John Thune, R-S.D., has a different perspective and believes that Trump should stay out of the Senate GOP leader race. Thune, who has been repairing his relationship with Trump in recent months, expressed his preference for Trump not to publicly endorse any candidate.
Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, has also been tight-lipped about his interactions with Trump but has emphasized the importance of maintaining a good working relationship with the president-elect. Cornyn has had success working with Trump during his first term and is focused on keeping the leader race out of the press.
The leader election, scheduled for November 13, will be conducted through a secret ballot among the Republican conference. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who is stepping down from his leadership position, has stated that he will not endorse any candidate in the race.
As the campaign for the Republican Senate leader position heats up, all eyes are on Trump and his potential endorsement.
