Saskatchewan Roughriders Acquire Veteran Quarterback Jake Maier from Calgary Stampeders

The Saskatchewan Roughriders made a significant move on Monday by acquiring the rights to veteran quarterback Jake Maier from the Calgary Stampeders in exchange for a 2025 eighth-round draft pick.

This trade gives Saskatchewan the exclusive opportunity to negotiate with Maier before he hits free agency on February 11.

Maier, who stands at six feet and weighs 200 pounds, has been a key player for the Calgary Stampeders over the past four seasons, starting 45 out of 65 games. During his time with Calgary, he completed 1,022 of 1,497 passes for 11,685 yards, throwing 60 touchdowns and 39 interceptions. Additionally, Maier showcased his versatility by rushing 60 times for 232 yards and scoring five touchdowns.

Last season, Maier completed 357 of 494 passes for 3,841 yards, recording 22 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Despite his efforts, Calgary had a challenging season with a 5-12 record, missing the CFL playoffs for the first time since 2004. The Stampeders recently acquired Vernon Adams Jr. from the B.C. Lions to bolster their quarterback options.

In other CFL news, the Saskatchewan Roughriders extended veteran starter Trevor Harris’s contract for one year. This move solidifies their quarterback position for the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, the Calgary Stampeders secured Canadian offensive lineman Zack Williams for another two years with a contract extension. Williams, a six-foot-five, 306-pound player from Winnipeg, was drafted by Calgary in the third round of the 2019 CFL draft. He has been a consistent presence on the Stampeders’ offensive line, starting 60 of 61 games since 2021.
