Royal family news: Meghan returns to Instagram for New Year’s video

Meghan Markle is kicking off the new year by rejoining Instagram after a hiatus since 2020.

The Duchess of Sussex’s new Instagram account, @meghan, was confirmed by the Associated Press on Wednesday. Her first post features a black and white video of her at the beach, dressed in white, and writing “2025” in the sand on a cloudy day. The account has quickly garnered over 200,000 followers.

Meghan and Prince Harry tied the knot in 2018 and initially shared the @KensingtonRoyal account with Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge. However, in 2019, Meghan and Harry launched their own account, @SussexRoyal, signaling their increasing independence from the royal family. The @SussexRoyal account was deactivated in 2020 when Meghan and Harry announced their decision to step back from their official duties.

Prior to her royal life, Meghan had a popular Instagram presence during her acting career on “Suits.” In a 2022 interview with New York Magazine’s The Cut, she hinted at her return, saying, “Do you want to know a secret? I’m getting back … on Instagram.”

Despite her eagerness to reconnect with her followers, Meghan has expressed concerns about online harassment. In 2023, she and Harry called on social media platforms to enhance their content moderation policies, warning about the negative impact of some apps on the mental health of young users.
