HUD says no more taxpayer-funded FHA mortgages for illegal immigrants

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has taken a significant step to ensure that federal home loans are not granted to illegal immigrants living in the United States. HUD Secretary Scott Turner recently announced the termination of mortgages for illegal immigrants, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that American taxpayers are not subsidizing open borders by offering home loans to those who have entered the country illegally.

This move comes as part of a joint effort with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to prioritize homeownership for Americans. Turner highlighted the need for HUD-backed mortgages to benefit individuals who follow the rules and work hard, rather than those who have entered the country unlawfully. The termination of these mortgages aims to protect the American Dream of homeownership and prevent the misallocation of taxpayer-funded resources.

In a collaborative effort between HUD and DHS, a memo was signed to end the wasteful misappropriation of public housing resources going to illegal immigrants instead of U.S. citizens. This initiative will involve data sharing and improved communication between the two agencies, with a focus on prioritizing American citizens, including veterans, when it comes to public housing.

According to HUD, approximately 9 million people currently live in subsidized housing across the country. It has been reported that about 59% of noncitizen households, including green card holders and illegal immigrants, utilize one or more public assistance programs, costing taxpayers up to $42 billion annually. President Donald Trump previously called for greater oversight to prevent illegal immigrants from accessing taxpayer-funded resources.

During the Biden administration, significant funds were allocated for housing migrants, including all-expense-paid stays at hotels. States such as Pennsylvania and Arizona have implemented measures to ensure that illegal immigrants do not take public housing resources away from Americans in need.

Overall, HUD’s decision to terminate mortgages for illegal immigrants underscores the agency’s commitment to upholding the integrity of federal home loans and prioritizing American citizens in matters of public housing. By working closely with DHS and implementing measures to prevent the exploitation of housing programs by undocumented immigrants, HUD aims to safeguard the American Dream of homeownership for those who play by the rules and contribute to society.
