Sanders calls Trump’s Iran nuclear strikes ‘unconstitutional’ during rally

Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., was in the middle of delivering a speech at a “Fighting Oligarchy” rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma when news broke that President Donald Trump had announced the successful attack on three nuclear sites in Iran. An aide interrupted Sanders’ remarks to deliver the message that Trump had posted the news on Truth Social.

Reading Trump’s post to his supporters, Sanders shook his head in disbelief as the crowd chanted, “No more wars!” The president’s announcement of the attack on Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan was met with shock and concern by Sanders and his supporters.

Trump’s post on Truth Social praised the American warriors for their successful mission and emphasized the need for peace. However, Sanders immediately pointed out the unconstitutional nature of the president’s actions, stating that only Congress has the authority to declare war.

Joining a bipartisan coalition in Congress, Sanders condemned Trump’s decision to strike Iran without congressional approval. A War Powers Resolution was introduced in the House of Representatives to address the unauthorized hostilities in Iran and direct Trump to terminate the deployment of troops without proper authorization.

Despite the alarming news, Sanders urged the crowd to stay focused on addressing domestic issues in Oklahoma, Vermont, and across the country. He emphasized the importance of standing up and fighting against unnecessary wars that the American people do not support.

Sanders has been a vocal opponent of the United States joining Israel in its conflict with Iran, criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to start a war. He reiterated that the U.S. should not be involved in conflicts that are not in the best interest of the American people.

The “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, spearheaded by Sanders in response to Trump’s second-term agenda, aims to mobilize support in deep red districts currently held by Republicans. Joined by other Democratic leaders like Rep. Greg Casar, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sanders is rallying support for progressive policies and pushing back against unjust military actions.

As Sanders continues his tour across the country, he remains steadfast in his commitment to fighting for the American people and advocating for peace and justice. The senator’s message resonates with supporters who are eager to see a more equitable and peaceful future for the country.
