Congressman reveals hidden secret passageways from America’s founding under Capitol floorboards

The U.S. Capitol, a historic building with a rich past dating back to the 18th century, holds many secrets beneath its floorboards. A recent viral video posted by Republican North Carolina Rep. Tim Moore showcases hidden staircases and passageways that have been preserved from the building’s original construction.
Construction on the U.S. Capitol began in the 1700s, with President George Washington laying the cornerstone in 1793. The building was completed in 1826, and over the years, various expansions and additions have been made, including the opening of a visitor center in 2008.
In the video, Moore takes viewers inside the Capitol’s Lincoln Room, a favorite spot for visitors to Washington, D.C. He reveals that the room holds a secret beneath its floorboards – a dusty staircase leading to another room below. Moore explains that the Lincoln Room is where Abraham Lincoln would sit by a fire and read letters during his time as a congressman representing Illinois from 1847-1849.
Legend has it that the staircase under the Lincoln Room was used by British soldiers during the War of 1812 to set fire to the Capitol. This event, known as the “Burning of Washington,” occurred in August 1814 when British soldiers set fire to the U.S. Capitol, the Washington Navy Yard, and the White House. Fortunately, storms extinguished the fires, and the War of 1812 ended in 1815.
As the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2026, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order outlining plans for a massive celebration. This includes launching a White House task force, building monuments honoring the nation’s founding and historical leaders, and protecting monuments from vandalism. The Army will also hold a parade next month to commemorate the 250th anniversary of its founding.
The U.S. Capitol’s hidden staircases and passageways offer a glimpse into the building’s storied past and the events that have shaped American history. With its rich history and hidden secrets, the Capitol continues to be a source of fascination for visitors and lawmakers alike.
