Schools shut across Nova Scotia as winter throws us an early snowball
Schools were cancelled across Nova Scotia, motorists were warned of poor driving conditions and many of us got to use our snow-shovelling muscles for the first time this winter as snow blanketed much of the province overnight.
Schools are closed Monday in these areas:
- Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education
- Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education
- Halifax Regional Regional Centre for Education (which had no classes today anyway; it’s a PD day)
- South Shore Regional Centre for Education
- Strait Regional Centre for Education
- Tri-County Regional Centre for Education has closed Digby area schools
The French school board says classes won’t be on today at: South Shore School Centre, Pomquet Acadian School, Beaubassin School, Beau-Port School,Bois-Joli School, Beaux-Marais School, Grand-Portage School, Sea and World School, Rose-des-Vents School, Sommet Secondary School, Mosaic High School and Torbé School.
The Nova Scotia Community College has shuttered all of its campuses for the day.
St. Francis Xavier University is closed. Saint Mary’s and Mount Saint Vincent universities will be closed until at least noon.
Allister Aalders, SaltWire weather specialist, said the early-week storm was the result of two areas of low pressure coming together to pass south of Nova Scotia, putting most of the province on the colder side of the system, resulting in accumulating snow for a large portion of the province.
Some areas were seeing their first significant accumulation of snow for this winter.
Nova Scotia Power was reporting scattered power outages because of the heavy snow, affecting about 18,000 customers as of 7:30 a.m., mostly in the Lunenburg and Halifax areas.
