What to know about US college student Sudiksha Konanki and her disappearance

The search for missing University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki has intensified as authorities chase leads in her disappearance. Konanki, a 20-year-old junior and pre-med student, was last seen in the early hours of March 6 on a beach outside the five-star RIU Republica Resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Surveillance video obtained by Noticias SIN captured Konanki and a group of individuals walking towards the beach near the luxury retreat around 4:15 am. One male friend who was with Konanki at the time is under investigation, as he was in the water at the same beach. Police are questioning him to corroborate his version of events as they continue their investigation.

Authorities have not named any suspects in the case, but they are re-interviewing individuals who were in close proximity to Konanki at the time of her disappearance. The Dominican National Police stated that they are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to locate Konanki.

Konanki, originally from India but a legal permanent U.S. resident from Loudoun County, near Washington, D.C., is described as 5 feet, 3 inches tall with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a brown bikini, hoop earrings, bracelets, and an anklet. Her clothes were found on the beach where she was last seen.

The search efforts involve several agencies, including the Dominican Republic Civil Defense, firefighters, the national police, the Dominican Navy, and the embassy of India in the Dominican Republic. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has filed for a Yellow Notice to be issued by INTERPOL, a worldwide police alert for a missing person.

The University of Pittsburgh Police Department is also working with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in the search efforts for Konanki. The hotel where Konanki was staying has activated an emergency protocol to assist authorities in the search.

A joint investigation into Konanki’s disappearance is being conducted by the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic, the Dominican National Police, and the Dominican Prosecutors Office. The FBI is also assisting in the search for Konanki.
