Seattle Police Officer Fired for Fatally Hitting Graduate Student from India with Patrol Car

A tragic incident in January 2023 led to the firing of Seattle police officer Kevin Dave after he hit and killed graduate student Jaahnavi Kandula from India with his patrol vehicle while responding to an overdose call. Interim police chief Sue Rahr made the announcement, stating that Dave had violated four department policies, including those related to safely operating a patrol vehicle. The Seattle Office of Police Accountability conducted an investigation into the incident, which ultimately resulted in Dave’s termination.

Rahr emphasized that while Dave did not intend to harm anyone that night and was rushing to assist a possible overdose victim, his reckless driving led to the loss of a human life. Despite his positive intentions, the consequences of his actions could not be overlooked, bringing discredit to the Seattle Police Department.

The decision to fire Dave comes after King County prosecutors declined to file felony charges against him due to insufficient evidence to prove that he consciously disregarded safety when striking Kandula. Instead, the Seattle City Attorney’s Office issued Dave a $5,000 citation for negligent driving. City prosecutors revealed that Dave was driving at speeds of up to 74 mph in a 25-mph zone before the fatal collision with Kandula.

The tragic incident sparked outrage in both the U.S. and India, particularly after body camera footage from another officer, Daniel Auderer, was released. In the footage, Auderer made insensitive remarks about Kandula’s life, suggesting it had “limited value” and that the city should simply “write a check.” Auderer, who was also a union leader, was subsequently fired for his comments, which were deemed damaging to the police department’s reputation and public trust.

Following Kandula’s death, her family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Dave and the city, seeking $110 million in damages along with an additional $11,000. The lawsuit alleges that Kandula suffered severe emotional distress and pain before succumbing to her injuries. The case is scheduled to go to trial in September.

The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of responsible and safe driving practices, especially for law enforcement officers.
