Sec Rubio says USAID cut 83% of its programs following DOGE review

Secretary of State Marco Rubio made a significant announcement on Monday, revealing that a whopping 83% of USAID programs are set to be terminated following a comprehensive six-week review conducted by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This decision marks a major shift in the management of foreign assistance programs in the United States.
Rubio took to social media to share the news, stating that a total of 5,200 contracts will be canceled, amounting to “tens of billions of dollars” that were being spent in ways that did not align with or even harmed the national interests of the U.S. He emphasized that it was time for a reform to ensure that taxpayer funds were being utilized effectively and responsibly.
In addition to the program cancellations, Rubio also revealed that the remaining 18% of USAID programs, approximately 1,000 contracts, will now fall under the jurisdiction of the State Department. This decision, made in consultation with Congress, aims to streamline operations and enhance oversight of these critical programs.
Acknowledging the efforts of DOGE and its dedicated staff, Rubio expressed gratitude for their hard work in achieving this much-needed reform. Musk, in response, commended the collaboration, highlighting the importance of consolidating key functions under the State Department’s purview. The two leaders recently found themselves at odds during a meeting with President Donald Trump’s Cabinet officials, but ultimately, Trump lauded Rubio’s efforts, emphasizing the importance of the reforms being implemented.
The move to overhaul USAID comes as part of a broader initiative by the Trump administration to revamp foreign assistance programs. Musk has been a vocal critic of the agency, citing concerns about its inefficiency and questionable spending practices. The decision to scale back USAID’s operations has faced legal challenges, with the Supreme Court recently refusing to halt a judge’s order to resume foreign aid payments under existing contracts.
As the State Department takes on a larger role in managing these programs, the focus is on ensuring that aid is distributed in a manner that aligns with U.S. interests and values. The shift in oversight reflects a commitment to accountability and effectiveness in foreign assistance efforts.
