Quebec senior found living in squalor had been under ex’s control for decades, police say

A heartbreaking situation unfolded in Quebec’s Eastern Townships when a 78-year-old woman was discovered living in deplorable conditions in her own home. The woman, who had been under the control of her ex-partner for an astonishing 27 years, was found sleeping on the floor in a house that was described as “unlivable” by authorities.

In late February, Memphrémagog police responded to a call regarding the removal of 13 cats from the woman’s residence in Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley. The cats were found to be sick and dehydrated, living in what was deemed a “toxic environment.” Upon entering the home, police were shocked to find the woman in a dire state as well.

Lieutenant Carl Pépin of the Memphrémagog police described the scene, stating that the woman was sleeping on the floor amidst filth and clutter that had accumulated over many months. The condition of the home was unstable, with no functioning stove and an unusable bathroom. The woman had to be carried out of the residence due to her physical state.

Authorities revealed that the woman’s ex-partner, who had not lived in the house for nearly three decades, had maintained control over her life. He exercised financial and psychological dominance, isolating her from the outside world and neglecting her basic needs.

The 65-year-old man from Sherbrooke was arrested on March 19 and could potentially face charges including criminal negligence causing bodily harm, failure to provide necessities of life, and mistreatment of animals in his care. While the charges have yet to be formalized in court, the man was released under certain conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on June 12.

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment and has since been relocated to a care facility. Karine Barrette, a lawyer and project manager with the Regroupement des maisons pour femmes victimes de violence conjugale, emphasized the prevalence of coercive control in relationships, regardless of age. This form of abuse involves tactics such as monitoring, threats, humiliation, and gaslighting to instill fear and maintain power over the victim.

It is crucial to recognize and address cases of coercive control, especially when they intersect with domestic violence. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, seek help from crisis lines and local support services. Remember, your safety is paramount, and assistance is available to those in need.
