Shubenacadie Sam predicts an early spring

SHUBENACADIE, N.S. — Shubenacadie Sam wanted nothing to do with winter on Friday morning.
It took the groundhog several minutes and nudges to emerge from her cozy burrow at the Shubenacadie Wildlife Provincial Park.
While she only appeared momentarily before dashing to hide under an evergreen tree, Shubenacadie Sam’s shadow was nowhere to be found.
According to folklore, that means we will have an early spring.
Shubenacadie Sam is the first prognosticator in North America to make her prediction on Groundhog Day.
If you’re looking for a second, third or fourth opinion, Lucy the Lobster in Cape Sable Island saw her shadow (can lobsters really do that?), forecasting six more weeks of winter. Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania agreed with Sam, and Wiarton Willie in Ontario will make his prediction soon.
The Shubenacadie Wildlife Park will be open until noon today. With the exception of Groundhog Day, the wildlife park is only open on weekends during the winter.
