Russia presents US with demands in order to end war in Ukraine: report

Russia has presented a list of demands to U.S. authorities in order to bring an end to the war in Ukraine, according to Reuters. The requests are also intended to reset the relationship between the Kremlin and Washington, D.C.

The announcement of these demands came shortly before the Russian Defense Ministry declared that it had taken control of Sudzha, the largest town in the Kursk region that had been occupied by Ukrainian forces since the surprise cross-border offensive in August 2024. Russian President Vladimir Putin visited military headquarters in the region and spoke with military commanders before the takeover.

While the exact contents of Russia’s list of demands have not been disclosed, they are said to be similar to demands previously presented to Ukraine, the U.S., and NATO. Discussions about these terms have reportedly taken place between Russian and American officials in recent weeks, both in person and virtually.

Previous demands included prohibiting Ukraine from joining NATO, agreeing not to deploy foreign troops to Ukraine, and international recognition of Putin’s claim that Russia owns Crimea and four provinces.

As of Wednesday, President Donald Trump was awaiting Putin’s response to a 30-day truce that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had agreed to during cease-fire talks in Saudi Arabia.

The Kremlin stated that it was waiting for more details about the cease-fire proposal before issuing a formal comment. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that he would present the proposal to Russia directly and assess their response to determine the potential for peace.

Russia has been adamant about achieving a permanent resolution to the conflict and has not accepted any concessions thus far. Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, is expected to travel to Moscow this week to continue diplomatic efforts.
