‘Squad’ members join House GOP bipartisan bill rejecting US involvement in Israel-Iran conflict

Rep. Thomas Massie, a conservative fiscal hawk from Kentucky, has taken a stand against President Donald Trump’s involvement in the conflict between Israel and Iran. Massie, who refused to support Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” has now introduced a bipartisan War Powers Resolution alongside Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna of California.
In a social media post announcing the resolution, Massie emphasized that the conflict between Israel and Iran is not America’s war to fight. He argued that any decision to engage in military action must be made by Congress in accordance with the Constitution. The resolution aims to remove U.S. Armed Forces from unauthorized hostilities in Iran and prohibit Trump from deploying troops without congressional approval.
The bipartisan coalition supporting the resolution includes an unlikely mix of lawmakers from both parties. Progressive members of the “Squad,” such as Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar, have joined forces with conservative Republicans like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to push back against further military intervention in the Middle East. They argue that Americans prioritize issues like affordable cost of living, safe communities, and quality education over getting involved in another foreign war.
The escalating tensions between Israel and Iran have raised concerns about the constitutionality of Trump’s decision to potentially strike Iran without congressional authorization. Under the Constitution, only Congress has the power to declare war. The bipartisan coalition behind the War Powers Resolution is determined to uphold this principle and prevent the United States from being dragged into another disastrous conflict in the Middle East.
As Trump considers military strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities, lawmakers are urging caution and emphasizing the need for congressional approval before any further military action is taken. The situation is further complicated by Iran’s warning that U.S. involvement in the conflict would lead to an “all-out war.” Israel’s preemptive strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities have escalated tensions in the region, prompting retaliatory attacks from the Islamic Republic.
Despite the ongoing conflict, the White House has not yet responded to the bipartisan War Powers Resolution introduced by Massie and Khanna. As the situation continues to unfold, lawmakers are calling for a diplomatic solution to prevent further escalation and protect American interests in the region. The resolution represents a significant bipartisan effort to uphold the constitutional authority of Congress in matters of war and national security.
