Former B.C. premier John Horgan to be remembered at memorial service

A provincial memorial service for former B.C. premier John Horgan will be held on Sunday afternoon at the Q Centre in Colwood, B.C. Horgan, who served as premier from 2017 to 2022, passed away on November 12 at the age of 65. The service will be attended by dignitaries including Lt.-Gov. Janet Austin and Premier David Eby, and will be led by Rev. Dr. Keith Howard.

Horgan, who was first elected to the B.C. Legislature in 2005 and became leader of the NDP in 2014, was known for his ability to work across party lines. After his retirement from politics, he was appointed as Canada’s ambassador to Germany.

During his time as premier, Horgan focused on affordability policies in response to the rising cost of living, as well as managing crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters. Carole James, a former leader of the B.C. NDP and Horgan’s longtime friend, praised his leadership style, saying he valued good ideas regardless of their source.

Horgan was affectionately known as the “people’s premier” for his ability to connect with individuals and change perceptions of politicians. His legacy will be remembered for his inclusive approach to governance and commitment to serving the people of British Columbia.

The public can sign a book of condolences in memory of Horgan starting on November 14 until the day after the memorial service. His passing has been mourned across the political spectrum, highlighting the impact of his leadership on the province.
