Students, teacher in N.S. play Santa role for those in need

In Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Lisa Roach and her middle school students have been spreading holiday cheer for more than 26 years through their Adopt-A-Family program. What started as a class project at St. Michael’s Junior High has now become a cherished tradition at Oceanview Education Centre.

The program is entirely student-run, with the students handling everything from fundraising to shopping for gifts. This year, they have raised over $18,000 to provide for more than 60 recipients, many of whom are school-aged children and their families.

While the shopping sprees were exciting, some of the gift requests were heartbreaking. Student Catherine Pilling noted that many recipients were asking for necessities rather than luxury items.

Despite the challenges, Roach and her students are dedicated to making a difference in their community. Former students often return to help out, showing that the spirit of giving lasts long after graduation.

As the holiday season continues, Roach is overwhelmed with pride for her students and their selfless efforts. She struggles to find the words to express just how proud she is of their generosity and compassion.

The Adopt-A-Family program is a shining example of the power of kindness and the impact that a small group of dedicated individuals can have on those in need. It serves as a reminder that even in difficult times, there is always room for empathy and support.
