Suffering in silence no more: How peer support helps people with chronic pain

decided to keep coming back. The 52-year-old from Bridgewater, N.S., has been living with chronic pain since he was injured in a car accident more than 20 years ago. He said he often feels isolated and misunderstood, but the support group has given him a sense of community and understanding that he has been missing.

“I felt like nobody understood what I was going through until I found this group,” said Wentzell. “It’s been a lifeline for me, knowing that there are others out there who truly understand the struggles of living with chronic pain.”

For MacMillan, the group has become her life’s work. She spends countless hours organizing meetings, reaching out to guest speakers, and providing a listening ear to those in need. She is determined to make sure that no one in her community suffers in silence like she did for so many years.

“I want people to know that they are not alone, that there is hope and support out there,” said MacMillan. “I want to be a voice for those who feel like they have been forgotten by the health-care system.”

Despite the challenges that come with living with chronic pain, MacMillan remains hopeful. She believes that with the right support and resources, those living with chronic pain can lead fulfilling lives and find joy despite their struggles.

“I have found my purpose in helping others who are going through what I went through,” said MacMillan. “I want to show them that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and that they are deserving of love, understanding, and compassion.”
