Sugar Bowl official speaks out after deadly Bourbon Street attack leaves at least 10 dead hours before kickoff

The College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup between No. 2 Georgia and No. 3 Notre Dame was marred by tragedy early Wednesday morning as an unidentified driver intentionally drove a car into a large crowd of people celebrating the New Year on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. The devastating incident resulted in the loss of at least 10 lives and left over two dozen others injured, according to New Orleans officials. The FBI is currently investigating the incident as an act of terror.

The attack shook the city as thousands of college football fans were gearing up for the highly anticipated game at the Caesars Superdome. Allstate Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley expressed his heartfelt condolences for the victims and assured that organizers are working closely with authorities to ensure the safety of attendees.

Security concerns have understandably heightened in light of the tragic event. The Superdome, which has a seating capacity of over 80,000, is set to host the game. Despite the tragedy, Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick indicated during a press conference that the game would proceed as scheduled, with measures in place to ensure the safety of all attendees.

The New Orleans Police Department revealed that the driver responsible for the attack killed at least 10 individuals and injured 35 others before engaging in a shootout with law enforcement officers, resulting in their own demise. The suspect’s identity has not yet been disclosed.

Furthermore, authorities discovered improvised explosive devices at the scene and are currently investigating their viability. Despite the unsettling turn of events, the game is set to kick off at 8:45 p.m. ET as planned.
