Support for Hamas declines as it threatens starving Palestinians seeking aid

The terrorist group known as Hamas has long been a dominant force in the Gaza Strip, but its grip on power is now facing a critical juncture. With dwindling support and influence, Hamas is under pressure to end the ongoing war and return the hostages taken during the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks.

According to Joe Truzman, a senior research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, Hamas is facing a crisis of legitimacy. By opposing a new aid distribution mechanism coordinated by the U.S. and Israel, Hamas is prioritizing its authority over the well-being of the Palestinian people.

Despite an aid blockade by Israel and images of starvation in Gaza, Hamas has threatened Palestinians who accept food aid and warned of consequences. However, desperate civilians have flocked to aid sites set up by the U.S.-Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, causing chaos and clashes with Israeli forces.

The GHF has denied Hamas’ claims of violence during aid distribution and has stated that no Palestinians have been detained or harmed while receiving aid. Despite the challenges, the GHF has distributed thousands of meals to those in need.

The failure of Hamas to provide affordable and accessible food has driven Palestinians to seek aid from external sources. Many have criticized Hamas for its lack of action and called for the return of hostages, an end to the war, and even the departure of Hamas from Gaza.

Truzman notes that while Hamas’ leadership remains committed and entrenched, the group’s image as the authority in Gaza is eroding. Public dissatisfaction with Hamas has grown, with many blaming the group for mismanagement and inflation.

The Wilson Center’s report highlights the lack of trust in Hamas’ leadership among Palestinians, with many expressing support for external aid mechanisms over Hamas’ governance. Truzman believes that if the new aid system proves successful in improving living conditions, it could further erode support for Hamas.

As the Gaza Strip continues to grapple with the aftermath of the 2023 attacks and ongoing conflict, the future of Hamas’ rule remains uncertain. With public dissatisfaction growing and external aid providing a glimmer of hope for improvement, Hamas faces a challenging road ahead.
