Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz van brings Level 4 driverless tech to cities

Volkswagen has truly outdone themselves with the design of their latest innovation, the ID. Buzz autonomous van. This van is a game-changer in the world of driverless transportation, offering a clean, connected, and scalable solution for cities and companies looking to embrace autonomous travel.

What sets the ID. Buzz apart from other autonomous vehicles is its SAE Level 4 autonomy, which allows it to manage all driving tasks without human input in certain scenarios. This is made possible by the 27 advanced sensors, including cameras, LiDAR units, and radars, that provide a 360-degree view of the surroundings for safe and accurate navigation. Volkswagen has also partnered with Mobileye to integrate trusted self-driving technology into the van.

Inside the ID. Buzz, passengers will find a spacious cabin with four seats, a raised roof, and ample luggage space. The vehicle can be unlocked using smartphones, and dedicated buttons for support and emergencies enhance convenience and safety for riders.

Unlike Tesla’s Robotaxi, which focuses on individual ride-hailing, Volkswagen envisions the ID. Buzz being used by companies and public transit agencies in fleet operations. The van is part of a complete, turnkey solution that includes training, fleet management tools, and real-time monitoring software, making it easy for cities and companies to launch autonomous mobility services quickly and confidently.

MOIA, Volkswagen’s mobility brand, has already partnered with Hamburg as its first municipal client, and a deal with Uber will bring the ID. Buzz to Los Angeles in 2026. Pending regulatory approval, a broader rollout is expected across Europe and the U.S. that same year.
