Progressive House member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also known as AOC, has taken aim at her own state party leadership for retracting its endorsement of a self-proclaimed democratic socialist running for mayor of Minneapolis.
Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., publicly criticized the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL), Minnesota’s Democratic affiliate, late Thursday night after it rescinded its endorsement of state Sen. Omar Fateh.
DFL leaders cited “substantial failures” in their endorsement convention process as the reason for the reversal.
“It is inexcusable to overturn the DFL endorsement of Omar Fateh,” Omar expressed on social media. “A small group, most of whom reside outside of Minneapolis, convened privately to negate the decision made by Minneapolis delegates who dedicated time and effort to the DFL process. This is unacceptable.”

The progressive congresswoman, along with other DFL officials, released a statement condemning the party’s decision.
“Currently, there is a noticeable divide between progressive Democrats challenging the status quo and moderate Democrats,” expressed Omar and fellow left-leaning officials.
“It is disheartening that Omar Fateh, the first Black mayoral candidate endorsed by the DFL in the last three decades, had his endorsement revoked.”
Omar has not publicly endorsed any candidate in the mayoral race scheduled for November 2025.
