Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s legal team has petitioned a federal judge in Tennessee to prevent high-ranking Trump administration officials from making statements that could prejudice the jury against their client.
The lawyers argue that members of the administration have repeatedly labeled Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national facing charges related to human smuggling, as a criminal gang member and have made other negative assertions that could unfairly influence the outcome of the case.
The defense team cited instances where Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem referred to Abrego Garcia as an “MS-13 gang member, human trafficker, serial domestic abuser, and child predator.”

“She also called Mr. Abrego a ‘monster,’” the attorneys noted.
This is not the first time Abrego Garcia’s legal team has raised concerns about statements from the administration. Previously, the judge advised the government to adhere to standard rules and procedures for prosecutions, which include refraining from making prejudicial comments outside of court.
