Colorado authorities linked crime surge to Venezuelan migrants as early as 2023

Authorities in Aurora, Colorado have uncovered a surge in Venezuelan-linked crime dating back to the summer of 2023, according to new emails obtained by America First Legal and provided to Fox News Digital. This revelation came nearly a year before the rise of Tren de Aragua activity was made public.
The emails reveal communications between state and local officials discussing the threat posed by Venezuelan nationals, some of whom may have ties to the violent Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang. One email chain from February discussed possible Venezuelan ties in Aurora, specifically mentioning two apartment blocks where Venezuelan refugees were being placed.
The Aurora Police Department official expressed concerns about the increase in violent crimes involving Venezuelan suspects in these areas since June of 2023. The difficulty in identifying individuals with no prior history in the U.S. was also highlighted in the emails.
The emails also mentioned the Papagayo Foundation’s role in placing Venezuelan refugees in these properties, potentially leading to TdA members moving to Aurora. The Aurora PD crime report indicated a significant increase in calls for service, with crimes ranging from motor vehicle crimes to assault.
Another document tracked incidents in apartments owned by CBZ management, revealing assaults, arrests of armed individuals, stabbings, and other violent incidents. CBZ claimed that TdA members had taken control of some of their properties in Aurora through threats and extortion.
In response to these concerns, APD contacted ICE HSI to identify suspects who may be involved with TdA or have Venezuelan ties. The emails underscored the growing presence of Venezuelan gangs in Colorado and the need for collaborative efforts to address the issue.
The revelations come amidst ongoing reports of Venezuelan and TdA activity in Colorado, with violent incidents drawing attention to the issue. Former President Donald Trump’s visit to Aurora during his re-election campaign highlighted his “Operation Aurora” to combat gang violence.
Despite efforts to downplay the issue, former residents and community members have raised alarms about the presence of gang activity in Aurora. A recent ICE raid in the area aimed to address the issue, but leaks about the operation forced gang members into hiding.
America First Legal Counsel Michael Ding criticized progressive politicians for downplaying the presence of illegal migrant criminal gangs and called for greater collaboration to deport dangerous individuals. The Trump administration’s actions to address the issue have been met with both support and scrutiny.
As the investigation into Venezuelan-linked crime in Aurora continues, authorities are working to address the underlying issues and ensure the safety of residents in the community. The collaboration between state and local officials, as well as federal agencies, will be crucial in addressing the challenges posed by Venezuelan gangs in the area.
