Elizabeth Smart kidnapper Wanda Barzee arrested for violating sex offender rules

Wanda Barzee, the woman convicted of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart over 20 years ago, has once again made headlines after being arrested for allegedly violating sex offender restrictions in Salt Lake City, Utah. Barzee was taken into custody after reportedly visiting two parks, which she is prohibited from doing as a registered sex offender.

Barzee claimed that she was commanded by the Lord to visit Liberty Park and Sugar House Park, where she enjoyed sitting on benches and feeding ducks. Under Utah law, sex offenders are not allowed to enter certain “protected areas,” including public parks.

In 2002, Barzee and her husband, Brian David Mitchell, abducted 14-year-old Smart at knifepoint and held her captive for nine months. Mitchell forced Smart into a polygamous “marriage” and subjected her to daily rape. Smart was rescued when a couple recognized her while she was walking with Barzee and Mitchell in Sandy, a suburb of Salt Lake City. Barzee and Mitchell were subsequently arrested.

Barzee was sentenced to 15 years in prison for aggravated kidnapping, while Mitchell received a life sentence. After cooperating with authorities to convict Mitchell, Barzee was released from prison in 2018 and placed under five years of federal supervision as a registered sex offender. She was also ordered not to contact Smart’s family.

Following Barzee’s recent arrest, Ed Smart, Elizabeth Smart’s father, expressed concern about Barzee posing a threat to children. While he believes Barzee is not a danger to his daughter, he emphasized the potential risk she may pose to kids due to her actions and statements.

Barzee’s attorney, Scott Williams, defended his client, stating that he was confident she was unaware of violating the terms of her sex offender status. Williams maintained that Barzee does not pose a threat to anyone.
