Record 7.3 million Canadians voted during advance polls: Elections Canada

Record 7.3 Million Canadians Cast Ballots in Advance Polls

An estimated 7.3 million Canadians — a record — took advantage of advance polls and cast their ballots over the long weekend, according to Elections Canada.

The non-partisan agency said that this marks a 25 per cent increase from the 5.8 million electors who voted in advance during the 2021 federal election.

“We thank all election workers for their dedication and all voters for their patience,” said Elections Canada in a social media post.

Advance polls were open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday across the country.

Over the weekend, a spokesperson for Elections Canada stated that it’s still too early to determine whether the record-high turnout will lead to higher voter turnout for the election overall. However, they highlighted that it is a positive sign that Canadians are engaged in the democratic process.

During the last federal election, more than 17 million voters cast their ballots, representing a voter turnout of 62.6 per cent, as reported by the independent agency.

With a record-breaking number of Canadians participating in advance polling, the upcoming federal election is shaping up to be a highly anticipated event. The surge in early voting indicates a strong level of civic engagement among the electorate.

Elections Canada has expressed gratitude towards election workers for their hard work and voters for their patience during the advance polling period. The four-day window provided voters with flexibility and convenience to cast their ballots ahead of the official election day.

As the country awaits the final voter turnout figures for the 2023 federal election, the significant increase in advance voting suggests that Canadians are eager to have their voices heard and participate in shaping the future of the nation.
