Zelenskyy open to Trump’s trade proposal of rare earth minerals for military aid
President Donald Trump recently suggested that Ukraine should consider offering critical minerals to the United States in exchange for military aid. This proposal came as a surprise to many, but President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine seemed open to the idea. Trump stated that the U.S. has invested significant amounts of money in Ukraine and highlighted the country’s great reserves of rare earth minerals. He emphasized the importance of securing access to these critical minerals for the U.S.
In response, President Zelenskyy expressed willingness to consider an “investment” from partners who could help defend Ukraine and push back against the enemy. He viewed this as a fair exchange, acknowledging the need for support in defending Ukrainian territory. Zelenskyy had previously been working to develop Ukraine’s untapped mineral resources and had offered incentives for outside entities to mine these minerals. However, many of these critical minerals are located in areas currently under Russian occupation, making access a challenge.
Ukraine possesses strategic reserves of minerals such as titanium, lithium, graphite, and uranium. These resources are crucial for various industries, including technology, healthcare, and energy. Zelenskyy revealed that Ukrainian leaders have been in contact with U.S. officials, including the U.S. special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, to discuss the potential collaboration. Plans are underway for U.S. officials to visit Ukraine and explore further opportunities for cooperation.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Congress has approved significant aid packages totaling around $175 billion for Ukraine. This assistance includes military support and economic aid to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression. Russia has criticized Trump’s suggestion, framing it as a shift towards commercializing aid to Ukraine rather than providing it unconditionally. The Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed a preference for the U.S. not to offer any aid to Ukraine at all.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also weighed in on the issue, calling Trump’s proposal “very egotistic” and highlighting the importance of Ukraine using its resources for postwar rebuilding efforts. China currently dominates the global production of rare earth minerals, accounting for approximately 70% of the market share. These minerals are essential for various industries, making access to them a valuable asset for countries like the U.S. and Ukraine.
