‘Obama Bros’ on DOGE: ‘Some of the stuff we should’ve done’

Former aides to President Barack Obama recently appeared on an episode of “Pod Save America” and made a surprising admission – they should have implemented some of the initiatives that President Donald Trump has undertaken with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

During the discussion about DOGE’s efforts to reduce federal spending, the “Obama bros” expressed regret over their missed opportunities. Jon Lovett, a former Obama speechwriter, mentioned that he was unaware that the executive branch had the power to make significant cuts to federal spending, as the Trump administration has done.

“Honestly, some of this is pretty annoying because it’s some of the stuff we should’ve done. We didn’t know you could do some of this,” Lovett remarked.

Jon Favreau, another former Obama speechwriter, echoed Lovett’s sentiments, acknowledging that the Obama administration had tried to streamline bureaucracy and enhance government efficiency, but found it challenging to achieve.

“We all know that government is slow. We all know government can be inefficient. We all know that the bureaucracy can be bloated. We all worked in the White House. We tried to reorganize the government. We tried to find efficiency. It’s hard to do,” Favreau added.

The podcasters also criticized the state of technology within the federal government during the Obama era, noting that it was subpar and hindered their ability to work efficiently.

“Pod Save America” did not respond immediately to inquiries from Fox News Digital regarding which specific DOGE initiatives the Obama administration should have pursued.

The conversation took place ahead of Trump signing an executive order directing agencies to collaborate with DOGE to downsize the federal government. This executive order is part of a series of recent government cutbacks that have targeted various areas, including DEI funding and migrant hotel expenses.

The “Obama Bros” have been active in the media, offering guidance to Democrats on how to engage politically during Trump’s second term. Tommy Vietor, a former Obama spokesman and co-host of “Pod Save America,” recently appeared on “Jesse Watters Primetime” to discuss the future of the Democratic Party.
